In these busy modern times, anxiety is a common mental struggle. It could be the result of a stressful job, a full schedule with no time for relaxation, or even the opposite – we may feel anxiety about a perceived failure to meet social expectations.
But even though these forms of anxiety are common, they can still be serious, destabilising, and disrupt our lives in many ways.
Whether your current circumstances are causing you to spiral into constant worry, or you suffer from one or more established anxiety disorders, it’s likely that you feel a sense of hopelessness about your ability to overcome. This is why it’s so important to know that help is available – with professional anxiety counselling, you really can achieve a happier, more functional life.
There are many different types of anxiety, and everybody responds to and copes with anxiety in different ways. A level of stress which some people find personally motivating, may cause an unhealthy amount of anxiety in others.
Some types of anxiety are linked to specific situations, such as anxiety that revolves around public speaking, or social anxiety. These are likely to be long-term issues the sufferer has experienced for many years, and may believe to be an unchangeable part of their personality. They could result in avoidance, isolation, or other behaviours that prevent the sufferer from living their lives to the fullest.
Anxiety disorders, such as generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), or obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), can be a full time battle with very little relief. Whether these are life-long issues, or arise later in life, they can quickly consume our thoughts and behaviour until we feel powerless against them.
With time, we might even find ourselves suffering interconnected mental health issues, such as depression, or feeling unable to participate in our own lives.
Does my anxiety need treatment?
It can be tricky to discern when feeling anxious from time to time is developing into a more serious mental health condition. Even if you feel you are coping well, or like the reasons behind your anxiety are trivial, the effects of experiencing prolonged levels of stress can be more detrimental to your health than you realise.
Often, we experience anxiety as a natural, helpful response to stressful situations. Also known as ‘fight or flight’, our bodies go into a state of hyper arousal in order to aid us with self-defence. However, we are not designed to be in this state for long. Things like an elevated heart rate, sleeping difficulties, and muscle tension, can lead to many other health issues over time.
Therefore, if excessive worrying has become part of your everyday life, it is highly recommended you seek treatment.
Some signs that you could benefit from anxiety treatment include recurrent feelings of tension or unease, restlessness and irritability, sleeping issues, excessive sweating, having intrusive thoughts, struggling with memory or concentration, or panic attacks.
If anxiety is impacting your relationships, or causing you to make unwise decisions in your career, it is 100% possible to regain control of your life through counselling.
How is anxiety treated?
The most effective, evidence based treatment for most forms of anxiety is cognitive behavioural therapy. When carried out by qualified clinical psychologists, this empowering method of counselling can help to reduce the symptoms of generalised anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and many other issues.
Depending on the patient and their needs, cognitive behavioural therapy can be blended with a variety of other talking therapies, in order to address the root of the issue and then pursue coping strategies which work for the individual.
You may benefit from 6 to 10 sessions, or prefer ongoing treatment.
Sessions are held in comfort and confidentiality. They allow you to speak one-on-one with an experienced and caring professional, give you a better understanding of your thought processes in relation to anxiety, help you to utilise healthier coping strategies, and encourage more confidence in your capacity to lead an anxiety-free life.
Although you may feel hopeless or ashamed about your anxiety, there is no denying the growing evidence that CBT really works. Research shows that CBT can result in improved functionality and a higher quality of life, even for the most advanced and long-lasting forms of anxiety.
But no matter what treatment is best for you, a good counsellor will always respect your comfort level and personal boundaries. You will not be pressured into talking about anything you don’t want to, and you’re free to disengage at any time.
